MICHAEL THOMAS GRIFFIN
engineering services director / city engineer
The Engineering Division provides engineering and project management services for the construction and improvement of roads, sidewalks, drainage structures, and bridges within the City. It also coordinates the plan review process for engineering and utility construction proposed by the local development community. The division includes personnel specializing in surveying, drafting, design, and right-of-way acquisition to support these construction activities.
The land surveying section collects surface and subsurface topographic data within project boundaries, including researching rights of way, easements, and utility lines to ensure accurate and reliable information for design. The drafting section produces clear, uniform, and functional drawings by combining survey and design data. The design section develops and oversees civil engineering plans for infrastructure such as roadways, drainage systems, sidewalks, parks, and utilities, ensuring designs are safe, cost-effective, and constructible.
The right-of-way section manages the legal acquisition of property needed for City improvements, including rights of way, easements, and entry permits, in accordance with federal regulations. This section also collaborates with the Alabama Department of Transportation on federally funded projects when necessary. Additionally, the Engineering Division investigates drainage and street complaints and develops remediation plans as needed.
To report a drainage problem or street problem (not potholes), call (334) 501-7390 or email the Engineering Services Department.
