Staff Sergeant Hugh Turner Jr. was born on April 30, 1946, in Munford, Alabama. A graduate of Ophelia High School, Turner consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to his community and country.

Turner began his military career in 1964, serving in the United States Army until 1971. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant (E-6) and was stationed in various locations, including Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and Mannheim, Germany.

His duties included serving as a Battalion Parts Clerk, Medical Supply Sergeant, and Movement Supervisor, overseeing the shipment of military vehicles and supplies across Asia.

A proud Vietnam Veteran, Reverend Turner was honored with several medals, including the Army Commendation Medal, Sharpshooter Badge, and the Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star. His military service laid a strong foundation for his future, instilling in him discipline and a lasting sense of duty.

Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Turner began a civilian career with the Southern Company. Over nearly three decades, he held several positions, including Procurement and Materials Coordinator and Senior Materials Management Specialist. He played a key role in managing large inventories and streamlining operations.

Turner married his wife, Veleria Wilson, on August 13, 1965, marking the beginning of a blessed marriage that lasted over 55 years. Together, they raised two sons, Felix and Christopher.

In 1997, Turner followed his call to ministry, becoming an Associate Minister at Greater Peace Missionary Baptist Church in Opelika. In 2002, Tuner moved to Auburn and was appointed Minister of Evangelism and Outreach where he created outreach strategies and strengthened ties with local organizations, greatly expanding the church’s reach.

Turner valued education and pursued learning throughout his life. He studied at the European Division of the University of Maryland, Jacksonville State University and the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theology from the Montgomery Bible Institute and Theological Center, as well as a Certificate in Christian Education from the Rushing Springs School of Theology, equipping him for a life of ministry and service.

Ordained in 1997, Turner served in various roles at Greater Peace Missionary Baptist Church, including Minister of Evangelism and faithful member of the prison and veteran’s ministries. He also participated in the Billy Graham School of Evangelism, further enriching his ministry. His leadership extended beyond the church, touching countless lives through spiritual teaching and community outreach.

Turner was a respected pillar of his community. He served on the Auburn Housing Authority Board of Directors and was a member of the Lee County Ministerial Alliance. He was deeply involved in mentoring and educating individuals throughout Auburn through organizations such as the 100 Black Men of Greater Auburn/Opelika, the Greater Peace Community Development Corporation GED and after school tutorial program, and the Jeter Learning Center. He also volunteered with Mercy Medical and the Community Market in Opelika, living out his faith through action.

Turner’s life of military service, professional excellence, educational achievement, and faith-based leadership left a lasting mark on all who knew him. His legacy continues to inspire others to live with compassion, integrity, and service.
